10 Easy to Use Superfoods

Before we get into this one you need to know what a superfood actually is because we have learned there is no real scientific definition for it.  So to put it in simple terms, it is essentially a food packed with stuff that shields our bodies from cell damage and helps prevent disease.   Still sounds super right?  Wait though, there is a catch.  Superfood can only be super if it is part of your everyday lifestyle.  Throwing a superfood into a meal only once in awhile is like Superman showing up to save you, but then ditching you at the first sign of kryptonite.  It needs to be present everyday so its superpowers are there whenever you need it.  Hope that analogy worked.

Here are 10 of our favorite easy to use superfoods and how you can  easily add them into your life.

We don’t eat these all everyday but they do find their way into our bodies a few times a week.

Chia Seeds

Packed with omega-3 fatty acids for the heart, fiber to eliminate toxins, and calcium pretty much needed for everything.  A great way to get plant-based omega-3s in your life so simply add them to yogurt and fruit bowls, smoothies, pudding, and oatmeal.

Hemp Seeds

High in protein and contains all the essential amino acids needed for cell growth and repair. You can put them in your yogurt and fruit bowls, smoothies, salads, and sometimes throw them into your guacamole.  And no you will not get high in case you are wondering.

High levels of antioxidants in the form of anthocyanins, which help fight cancer and heart disease.  Also one of the few fruits with oleic acid—the same heart-healthy fat in olive oil.  It is best to buy it in frozen packs and blend with smoothies and or stop at few local spots that make awesome acai bowls, which is our family favorite.

Nutritional Yeast

Made from deactivated yeast and has no leavening power.  It’s a great source of protein and fiber and is also among the only vegan-friendly sources of vitamin B12, which is essential for normal brain and nervous-system function but found mostly in meat and dairy products.  Easy to use as a seasoning on a ton of stuff, we just sprinkled it on our pizza tonight.

Brussel Sprouts

More glucosinolate than any other vegetable which helps combat cancer and detoxify our bodies. Make sure at LEAST one meal a week has a huge portion of brussel sprouts.

A half-cup gets you more than five times your daily dose of vitamin K which helps blood clot to prevent excessive bleeding and builds strong bones.  Easy to throw into smoothies, salads, and also use as a bed to put different foods on. Spinach is also bipolar if you did not know. It is happy and good when uncooked but gets sad and angry once cooked and wilted.

Sweet potatoes

Half of a large baked sweet potato delivers more than 450% of your daily dose of vitamin A, which protects your vision and your immune system. You can make your own sweet potato fries, breakfast skillets, roast it and put it in salads, have it as sides, and we love it in chili.

Loaded with plant omega-3s, fiber, and has more lignans that may prevent endometrial and ovarian cancer than any other food.  Keep it stored in your fridge and add it into your smoothies, yogurt and fruit bowls, oatmeal, granola, and muffins.

Improves memory by protecting your brain from inflammation and boosting communication between brain cells.  Easy to throw into smoothies, yogurt and fruit bowls, salads, muffins, and make a great snack as is.

Cacoa Nibs

Contains flavonoids to help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the brain and heart. Also gives you the chocolate flavor without the guilt.  Perfect to add to yogurt and fruit bowls, smoothies, oatmeal, muffins, pretty much anything that would have a chocolate chip.
